Young british athletics talent. Photographed at the National Training Academy outside of Birmingham. We spend the afternoon with the athletes capturing them in training across a range of disciplines. Using a heavy amount of flash to overcome the messy and flat gym interior. We also shot ‘body parts’ for the client to convey the peak physical condition of these elite athletes. As a sports portrait photographer I love the moody dark drop off you get when shooting in large training facilities.
Le Comptoir Général
I was recently commissioned to travel to France to shoot this quirky lifestyle travel feature on Le Comptoir Général in Paris. The LCG, as it is known, is run like a department store, with concessions operated by an eclectic bunch of traders. Most of the staff have links with Africa, cross-continental characters who effortlessly mix what they term ‘ghetto cool’ from homelands like Morocco or Togo with Parisian flair to create the kind of edgy street style spotted in New York or London but rarely seen in France’s highly polished capital. Here a a few of the characters I met.
More - Sport Uncovered
Here is an update on my ongoing Sport Uncovered project commissioned by Sport Magazine. One image is used by the magazine every two weeks. Here a a few of the images that have been published since my last update. Featuring: Kristian Thomas, Marvin Sordell, Eni Aluko and Sarah Lindsay. As a sports portrait photographer I’m constantly thankful to all the subjects for being so willing to get involved.
Derren Brown
Good to see an image of mine gracing the cover of “My VIP” magazine. This image was shot at Derren's central london home and features his pet parrot Rasputin, a Blue Quaker. As a portrait photographer I more often that not work with celebrity’s - Darren was as charming as his flat is bonkers.
The Rise of Harry Kane
Images of the most talked about British footballer of the season. Used by a number of publication (including here Sport Magazine). We devised a very simple, almost classical, lighting style and pose to mirror Harry's very traditional on field playing style.
C5 - Big Brother
I was recently called upon to shoot Katie Price for Channel Five prior to her surprise inclusion in the big brother house. Shot of green-screen the famous big brother eye was later dropped in.
Miami Heat - Luol Deng
He is one of the UK’s highest paid sports stars (a reported 14.5 million per year) playing for NBA side Miami Heat but maintains a low profile this side of the Atlantic....yes I had to stand on a box to shoot.
Grey
Images from a recent personal project. Shot at Holborn studios with hair and makeup by www.sadafmakeup.com. This small series of reflective portraits explores the relationship between the body and emotional memories.
Sport Uncovered
The first in a long series. I have spent the last year getting leading figures in the world of UK sport to shed the Lycra and pose naked. A celebration of the body at its peak. Sport magazine will be featuring one image every two weeks, both female and male – abled bodies and from Paralympic disciplines. Follow thislink to see the set in the projects section of my website as it grows….Read an article in the Daily Mail on the shoothere.
Campaign Images
A recent commission for Kite to shoot their latest campaign. We also handled all aspects of production working with stylist Alice Timms and art director Chris Bell. We devised an angular shooting style using a gobo technique to creative dramatic light streaks behind the subjects, mirroring the brands logo and complementing the new metal range.
Sterling Cover
A recent cover of Forever Sports featuring England international Raheem Sterling. We shot in Liverpool after his daily training session not at Anfield but the close-by Aintree. It was one of Raheem’s first major cover shoots as he cements his place as one of England's most exciting young players.
Techcrunch / Kurobuta
A couple of cuts from ES Magazine. I spent a couple of days at a techcrunch internet start up conference, where the next twitters vie for funding from angel investors. The second spread features Australian chef Scott Hallsworth and the staff of his London restaurant Kurobuta.
KP
Kevin Peterson photographed at The Oval in South London for Sport Magazine which made the cover.
Party Time
My behind the scenes work for ES Magazine. Lurking backstage at a party thrown by The British Film Institute I followed the party's preparations throughout the day into the evening when the likes of Emily Blunt, Christopher Waltz and Erin O'Connor arrived.
Danny Cipriani
Shot at our favourite Manchester studio Photolink (they are always so helpful) we spent the afternoon with leading rugby player Danny Cipriani. Using a mixture of flash and continuous light to get a set showing movement, speed and agility…oh and his chest, the client was very keen on that.
Political Health
A few leading faces from the world of Politics. Andy Burnham of Labour and Norman Lamb of the Lib Dems both covering the health portfolio both shot for Pulse at their respective offices in Portcullis House, Westminster.
New Site
Please to announce that I have a lovely new website for you to take a look over. It has been up for a few weeks now as we tinker with it - as well as uploading new content. The site is built in HTML5 (so I'm told) which means you can view it on any device and it should display the same content. We have also worked on the blog (this bit) so that it sits on the main site better and you can jump across to the portfolio pages without getting lost and confused. Check it out…(well you already have sort of).
Scuba
An on-going commission for Easy Jet – I have been shooting a whole host of portraits capturing the different faces that use their airline – the ‘Easy Jet generation’. So far I have shot amongst others a DJ’s, a surfer a model and here a scuba instructor. As a portrait photographer I’m always intrigued who they will find next.
Norway - Into The Wild
Some images from a recent shoot in Norway for a six page travel feature. I spent four days in Northern Norway with an arctic survival guide and former Norwegian Special Forces soldier. It was late summer so the conditions were not as harsh as they could have been. No tents, we slept under the stars and caught fish in remote lakes. So isolated was our location that in the four days we didn't see another person, car, road or in fact any sign of man. As a lifestyle photographer you couldn’t wish for better light or subjects.
Rio Ferdinand
Recent cover shoot with former England and Manchester United footballer Rio Ferdinand. Shot in South London where he now plays. The arrows were shot in camera using electrical tape. We had around ten minutes for the pictures so everything was in place and tested before his arrival.
